Quality public education is of vital importance to our communities and to the future success of our nation. Congressman Artur Davis invites you to join him in a discussion with prominent educators to talk about what’s working in our public schools and how we can apply those best practices elsewhere. This event will examine the work of educators who have successfully used standards to improve teaching, motivate students and faculty, and raise achievement in public schools.

Congressman Davis is hosting this event in conjunction with the Education Trust, a nonprofit organization that works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels. This conversation coincides with the upcoming reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act and the recent release of an Education Trust report that examines the educational practices and policies that have raised academic achievement for low income and minority students.

Martha Barber, Alabama Reading Initiative Principal Coach
 Martha Barber is the former principal of Birmingham’s Tuggle Elementary School, which was designated a national Title I Distinguished School during her tenure. Today, she works hands-on with 36 principals around the state, guiding them on how to improve reading instruction in their schools.

Stephanie Robinson, Principal Partner, The Education Trust
Stephanie Robinson has dedicated more than 30 years of experience working with communities to ensure that all students reach high standards. Prior to joining the Education Trust, Robinson worked as a public school teacher, an administrator, the Deputy Superintendent of the Kansas City School District, and as the Education Director for the National Urban League.

Betsy Rogers & Margie Curry, Brighton Middle School
Betsy Rogers, 2003 National Teacher of the Year, and Margie Curry, Principal of Brighton Middle School, works hard to ensure their children receive a quality education regardless of their economic status. This team began working together at Leeds Elementary. Betsy Rogers was also named Alabama’s Teacher of the Year.

Sheritia Williams, Principal, Kinterbish Junior High School
In 2005 every third-grader at Kinterbish who took the ARMT met or exceeded state reading standards. Kinterbish Junior High is a high poverty school in Alabama’s Black Belt, with students from many nearby towns and rural settlements, including Kinterbish, Cuba, Livingston, Ward, Whitfield, York and Townsend Mission.
