Board of Directors has approved a three-year, $60,000 contribution to the A+ Education Foundation. “Alfa supports education at all levels,” said Jerry Newby, Alfa president and chief executive officer. “A+ has established itself as one of the driving forces to ensure Alabama children receive excellent educations. Our board believes Alfa and A+ can collaborate to meet our common goals.” The nonprofit and nonpartisan A+ Education Foundation advances policies and programs to improve the performance of Alabama’s public K-12 schools. Since l991, A+ has invited businesses across the state to become active participants in establishing high standards for schools. "We believe it is important for Alabama's business community to partner with education leaders and with schools to ensure that we provide every child with the opportunity to succeed," said William E. Smith Jr., chairman of the A+ Education Foundation and Royal Cup Inc. Alfa has pledged to give $20,000 a year for three years. “For years, Alfa has maintained that one of the challenges facing Alabama’s education system is accountability,” Newby said. “Since its inception more than a decade ago, A+ has been a longstanding advocate for accountability as well. We look forward to working with A+ on this issue.” In 1998, Alfa helped A+ launch the highly acclaimed Alabama Reading Initiative, a research-based system for teaching students to read.
